"Is Roy in?" "No, he’s out hunting." "But we’ve just seen him. Up there, at the window."
Jackie knows exactly who they saw, and it wasn’t her brother. The Keeper’s Cottage at Knole Park is hundreds of years old, it was a pub once, and Jock has walked its landings for as long as anyone remembers.
It is 1971, the year of the new decimal money, and nothing at the cottage is quite as it was. A stranger has been asking in the post office about "the old Knole pub cottage". Then there is a footprint in the garden that nobody in the family made, and a loose brick missing from the inglenook.
Somebody believes the cottage is hiding something, and they are prepared to come in at night to find it. Roy, Jackie and their friends mean to find out who first.
Book Three of The Deer Park Mysteries, for readers aged 12 to 17.
Opening extract
The fires came first. Decimal Day or not, they always did.
Roy was down the ladder-stair at ten to five on Monday the fifteenth of February, 1971, with his jersey on inside out and his socks in his hand, and the Keeper's Cottage was black as the inside of a boot. The Government, which had stolen an hour of every winter morning three years ago and never given it back, meant that in February the sun didn't trouble itself over Knole until after eight. Roy didn't mind. The dark was his. He had owned it since he was nine.
