In Consett, an old man is found dead in his allotment shed. Beside him are an envelope and a handwritten card naming the plant that killed him: monkshood. Days later a second envelope arrives, this time addressed to Detective Inspector Kit Brannigan. Inside is a sprig of foxglove and a warning about something the town buried in 1989.

Kit has come home to care for her father. Now she's hunting a killer who grows his weapons under glass and seems to know her family better than she does. Every death comes with a calling card, and every card points further into the past, and closer to home.

The Apothecary is working through a list. Kit has to find him before her name comes up.
