The road has left Scotland behind. The company cross into a Lakeland November of raddled ewes and drystone walls that climb straight over the tops.
In a field above the valley they find a girl in a hoodie who says people call her Wren. She remembers nothing before she was twelve. Her milestone count is higher than anything Calum Munro has seen. And the Stood of the corpse roads are hunting her.
Taking her on will cost them all. Leaving her will cost something else.
Below them Haweswater has drained away, and the drowned village of Mardale stands in the open air again, its church waiting at the bottom of the valley. Every mile so far has taken something from Calum, and at Mardale the road means to take more than ever.
The Drowned Church is the third book of The Wayless Road, a mystery with a folk-horror edge about grief and the long road south.
