In a Caithness that isn’t quite Caithness, a lost croft stands in perfect repair.

Ahead lie flagstone fences with no wire, ditches ruled straight across a bog that breathes, and a railway line that turns when no one is looking.

Calum Munro is still walking towards the place where, people say, you can bargain for what you’ve lost. Ines Halloran walks beside him with her notebook of rules. Dougie Shearer walks towards the croft his family lost, and finds it waiting for him.

Then Kirsty Bain, a Thurso fisherman’s widow with a creel on her back, falls in with them. She reads the wind like a skipper and mends nets by the fire.

But the Stood are finding the company at every camp, however far they walk. And this stage of the road wants something bigger than a smell or a word. It wants a whole summer from Calum’s memory.

The Flagstone Moor is the second book of The Wayless Road, a mystery with a folk-horror edge about grief and the long road south.

Opening extract

The ditches ran the wrong way.

That was the first thing Calum saw when the light came up properly, and he saw it the way he would have seen a hind standing wrong on a face, before he knew what he was looking at. A ditch is cut to take water off the ground, and water goes downhill, and so a ditch follows the fall of the land, near enough, whatever the man with the spade had in his head. These did not. They were ruled.
